Bob.: Carrying on with the recent physics theme, I was thinking today, what would have happened if all chemical bonds broke down at 10 Kelvin instead of a few thousand Kelvin. No life anywhere in the universe. Or if any atom heavier than helium was radioactive. No life. Or if an atom consisted of two nuclei rotating around each other like binary stars, with electrons randomly moving around them, and occasionally hitting one then flying off never to return. No life.
Assuming you aren't religious (and I'd say that's the majority here), and you agree with my design complexity theory (below), the only logical conclusion is that you have many, many universes with slightly different physical constant values. Gravity, charge on the electron, speed of light etc. I've seen the number 10^500 universes thrown about in some places. It's likely that the vast majority of these universes don't function correctly enough to sustain life.
My design complexity theory: the probability of an untested one-off design working is inversely proportional to its complexity. Design a Boeing 747 completely on paper, and it'll probably crash. Design a cardboard box, and it's probably not going to fall apart. The subatomic world is probably on the higher end of the scale.
