European Companies Limit Always-On Communications

As the holiday vacation arrives, it's good to remember that there once was a time when people didn't get e-mail at all hours of the day or night. Now, Volkswagen has agreed to give German workers a taste of that world.

Following a union agreement, the largest European carmaker will limit work-related e-mails on the BlackBerry smartphones of about 1,200 workers to a half-hour before and a half-hour after the workday for its staff. Mobile devices will still be available for calls by those workers, at any time.

No Longer 'Switch Off'

According to news reports, the agreement only relates to those workers covered by collective bargaining, thus apparently leaving executives to the same always-on schedule. The Trades Union Congress has issued a statement cautioning that Volkswagen's solution may not work in other organizations.

Another German company, Deutsche Telekom, created a Smart Device Policy in 2010 that allows workers to have a communication-free time when they're not at work. At the time, the company said that mobile communication devices have advantages, but they also create conditions where employees can no longer "switch off" their worktime.

Communication overload is also being addressed by other European companies. For example, international IT services company Atos Origin proclaimed an ambition in February to become a "zero e-mail company" within three years. CEO and Chairman Thierry Breton said in a statement that "we are producing data on a massive scale that is fast polluting our working environments and encroaching into our personal lives."

'Unsustainable for Business'

Thierry said the volume of work-related e-mail was "unsustainable for business," with managers spending five to 20 hours weekly on e-mails, using 25 percent of their time searching for information, and finding that only about 15 percent of the e-mails received in a day were useful.

Canadian Company Sues RIM for BBM Trademark

As if Research In Motion needed another lump of coal in its Christmas stocking, the BlackBerry maker has received more bad news -- this time on the legal front. RIM may have to spend more money trying to ward off yet another trademark dispute.

Indeed, even as RIM is reeling from the forced name change of its next-generation operating system from BBX to BlackBerry 10, a Canadian company has taken issue with the name of its long-popular instant-messaging platform.

BlackBerry Messenger has been a RIM favorite, allowing BlackBerry users to send each other text messages and pictures through the RIM network and get delivery and read confirmation. Many users just call the service BBM for short, but BBM Canada is looking to Canadian federal court for a remedy.

BBM Canada Willing to Deal

According to a Reuters report, BBM Canada, a company somewhat like Nielsen in that it measures radio and television audiences, plans to argue its case against RIM in February. Jim MacLeod, BBM's CEO, told Reuters he wants RIM to stop advertising the BBM name. But MacLeod also suggested he would be willing to change BBM Canada name -- for a price.

"We have to be practical, they operate worldwide, we don't. But we're not prepared to just walk from our name," MacLeod told Reuters. "I'm sure to a really big company this looks like relatively small numbers, but to us it's a big deal. It's a trademark they don't even own, it's ours."

The timing is noteworthy. BlackBerry has been offering BBM for many years, but recently made a big splash in the RIM world when it rolled out BBM Music. BBM Music is a cloud-based music service for BlackBerry users. RIM was not immediately available for comment.

Google's Schmidt Promises Serious iPad Rival

A battle between Google and Apple over the mobile communications market will get brutal next year as the search and operating-system giant launches its own branded device to take on the iPad.

That's what Google CEO Eric Schmidt promises, telling an Italian newspaper that "in the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality." The comments in Corriere della Serra are widely believed to signal that a tablet based on the pure-Google Nexus phone model is in the works.

'Leading Edge of Google Technology'

There are already dozens of tablets made by other manufacturers that run Google's Android operating system, including Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Motorola's Xoom. Given the increasingly cozy relationship between the Mountain View, Calif.-based company and South Korean electronics giant Samsung, it might be a safe bet that's who is building it.

Samsung just released the Galaxy Nexus, the first to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and its devices are to be the first to get Android updates.

So how would a Nexus tablet be different from a Tab or a Xoom? And how would it stack up against the market king iPad 2?

"The Nexus line defines the leading edge of Google's technology," said Rob Enderle, principal technology analyst at Enderle Group. "This is the fast track to market, but the iPad is defined by user experience, not by technology leadership. "

Enderle said Schmidt's boast reminded him of similar posturing by Palm before the unsuccessful 2010 launch of its Palm Pre phones.

"Google is the master of fast, but to compete successfully with Apple you have to be the master of user experience and both define and deliver a great one," Enderle said. "Google has struggled with that, and simply bringing out a bad, cheap copy of the iPad won't prove to be that successful."

Automatic Updates Coming To Internet Explorer

Microsoft intends to begin delivering automatic updates of its Internet Explorer browser beginning next year to ensure that as many machines as possible running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 are protected from the latest malware schemes of cyber criminals.

"Automatic updates are a very good idea based on every piece of security research I've seen," said White Hat Security CTO Jeremiah Grossman. "Keeping software up to date -- particularly Web browsers -- is critical for online security."

The new service will be available initially to those Windows customers who have activated the automatic update feature in Windows. The plan is to introduce automatic IE upgrades gradually -- with the first Windows users to see the new offering located overseas and then scaling up delivery over time.

"This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward," noted Ryan Gavin, the general manager of Internet Explorer business and marketing at Microsoft.

"We will start in January for customers in Australia and Brazil who have turned on automatic updating via Windows Update," he wrote in a blog Thursday.

Increased Protection

According to Microsoft's latest security intelligence report, the biggest online threat that Windows users face comes from socially engineered malware targeting outdated Web browsers and other aging software. Making the move to the most current products and services helps PC users increase their protection against the most prevalent online threats, the software giant said.

One of the popular features of Google's Chrome Web browser has long been its seamless, out-of-sight upgrades under the hood. Earlier this year, Mozilla likewise indicated that it would emulate Google's browser upgrade strategy by early 2012 and now Microsoft intends to follow suit.

RIM's Stock Dives as BlackBerry 10 Launch Is Delayed

If Research In Motion were a ship, it would be springing one leak after another, while trying to reach port just over the horizon. On Friday, stock prices of the beleaguered mobile-device maker fell as much as 10 percent, as the company said that the launch of its next-generation smartphone, the BlackBerry 10, will ship in the latter part of 2012 instead of the previously-announced first half.

In its third-quarter report released Thursday, RIM said revenue was 24 percent up from the previous quarter, but, year-over-year net income was down 71 percent. About 14 million BlackBerry smartphones were shipped, meeting expectations, as well as about 150,000 PlayBook tablets. Total subscribers, now about 75 million customers, is up 35 percent from last year.

LTE Chip

RIM said the BlackBerry 10 delay was because the dual-core LTE chipset in the new phones will not be ready until the middle of June. Market observers attributed the stock price hit to the newly announced delay.

RIM has not specified which chip it has chosen, but some industry observers have noted that a Qualcomm chip, the first one to actually integrate LTE capabilities and possibly the one selected, will be available to other device makers by early 2012.

Others have questioned whether this next-generation smartphone line, which is seen as critical to getting RIM back into a healthy market position, should be entirely based on high-speed Long-Term Evolution data compatibility, especially since the overwhelmingly majority of RIM's sales are outside the U.S., where the transition to LTE/4G is not as advanced.
